South African Provinces by Population (2025): Gauteng is the most populated province with 15,099,422 people while the Northern Cape is the least populated with just 1,355,946 people. The demographic estimates for the first quarter of 2025 released today are considered preliminary and will be updated using the standard procedure followed by Statistics Canada for decades. They are based on 2021 Census counts, adjusted for census net undercoverage and incompletely enumerated reserves and settlements. A population projection is a forecast of future population growth. BC Stats applies the Component/Cohort-Survival method to project the population. This method „grows“ the population from the latest base year estimate by forecasting births, deaths and migration by age.
