GBS Zero build: Getting started

This blog is following the build of my very own Seven Style Kit Car. The kit is from Great British Sportscars (GBS) based in Newark, Nottingham and utilises a Mazda MX5 as the donor vehicle. This is the new Mazda Zero kit. Now, new targets have been set, Mazda also produced an MX6 with a 2.5 litre V6. GBS make a lot of components for things like suspension themselves using some very cool CNC machines, rather than buying off-the-shelf or having them made specially by external companies. Keith explained this gives them better control over the quality and availability of the parts the cable to slide as well as the freedom to try different ideas as GBS only sell one car, the GBS Zero but they do supply two versions of that car and also two different sizes of chassis. In the interim I bought an almost finished Locost project with an Rx-7 drivetrain. I will be watching your progress with great interest.

Mazda MX5 Donor Parts Many of the major mechanical components for the car come from a MX5 donor, but unfortunately they don’t come ready to fit!
Again, it’s been a long time since my last post. Time for a bit of a catch up. First part fitted to the chassis is the differential. This thing has taken the longest and been the most painful donor with great interest part to de-rust and clean up, so it’s with some satisfaction that I now have it attached to the car. I had to drill 3 holes in the top bracket in line with the plate on the chassis. It sits
Intriguing. But most of the Zero must be off the shelf, surely? Actually no. GBS says it makes 80 per cent of its components in-house, including the brakes (300mm four-pots), 42mm 4-2-1 exhaust On to the clutch cable. There is a mounting bracket near the pedal that the cable passes through, well it is supposed to. The reality is that connector that fits to the pedal won’t go through the hole so a slot has to be cut in the side of it. Thankfully I have an angle grinder so it was a simple job to put the slot in for the cable to slide through. Here is the cable in place.

The transformation is complete and now in real life. Stock 21307 Caterham Lego model modified to be closer to GN13 both physical features and colour scheme. Some license with the exhaust exiting the bonnet and 4x pipes to the collector and silencer, while not strictly accurate it looks the part. The loom that runs to the front of the than buying off the car connects the headlights, indicators, fan, and horn. These are all terminated on connector blocks ready to be linked to the lights when installed. The engine obviously requires a lot of wiring, but this will be kept separate.
