Why Do Helicopter Pilots Fly From The Right Seat?

Di: Henry

Given that most people are right handed, and a helicopter’s controls are a lot more sensitive than airplanes, the pilot was seated on the right side to allow him/her to fly with the right hand and with the left hand on the collective.

Why Helicopter Pilots On Right Seat?

Helicopter pilot. Helicopter flying aircraft over mountains and ocean ...

So, the most likely conclusion here is that the left seat became that of the PIC simply because it offers the clearest view of the runway while navigating traffic patterns. The opposite is true for helicopter pilots—they act as PIC from the right seat because they are often directed into right-hand traffic patterns during VFR Eventually most of the military testing and development went to the USCG. Since the first military (USCG) helo pilots learned to fly from the right side, that became the PIC position. The early USCG helo pilots eventually taught the USN and Army pilots how to fly.

Why does the pilot of a helicopter sit on the right? Why does the pilot sit on the right in a helicopter? Early helicopters were built with only one collective control and throttle located between the seats. Having the Pilot in Command seated in the right seat meant that the collective and throttle would be in the left hand. In the very early days to change of flying, pilots would fly between locations following the road system. By sitting on the left, they would keep the road in sight through their front and left side window Igors first helicopter had just one collective control, it was center mounted, igor being right handed, made using this single collective more comfortable from the right seat.

Because the pilot was seated on the left, the descending helicopter would have been hidden from view by the roof panel. when quick and The passenger in the right hand seat may have been able to see the descending aircraft but we’ll never know that.

Practicing the technique may actually improve your left-seat landings as well. Basic flying will be ho-hum from the right seat; most pilots have „fiddled“ from the right seat in cruise while riding along as a chart folder and traffic spotter. It is when quick and unplanned actions are necessary that the discomfort factor kicks in. Why do helicopter pilots fly from the right seat? Traditionally, the first officer sits on the right-hand side of a fixed-wing aircraft (“right seat”) and the left-hand side of a helicopter (the reason for this difference is related to, in many cases, the pilot flying being unable to release the right hand from the cyclic control to operate I could sit in either the right seat (pilot station) or the left seat (Tactical station running the ASW/ASUW/EW kit) but I was still the Helicopter Aircraft Commander (HAC) regardless of which seat I occupied. However as that was USN and not US Army, that hardly helps your Apache (UK) to Apache (US) comparison.

Someone asked which seat the pilot sit in. Well, the helicopter was designed for the Aircraft commander to fly in the right seat. BUT the Aircraft commander had his choice. Slick ACs in our unit Why do helicopter pilots sit on the right seat instead of the left, as airplane pilots traditionally do? In this engaging video, we dive into the fascinating reasons behind this design choice Hier sollte eine Beschreibung angezeigt werden, diese Seite lässt dies jedoch nicht zu.

The reason for pilot sitting on the left side of the cockpit goes back to olden times. Single engine propeller aircraft have tendency to yaw left. This tendency of the aircraft is known a slipstream effect. Why? Click to expand The collective is left hand. By placing the PIC seat right, the collective is on the left, which makes controls easier to route to the rotor head. There are left seat PIC helicopters. Bell 47G, HU-269B and C, HU-500C, Enstrom are a few examples. Left Hand PIC in a helicopter is also handy when doing external

It is kind of like asking why fixed wing instructors sit in the right seat and students in the left. Usually. They ask you. L looneyloonxx Why do helicopter pilots sit right seat? Most helicopters these days have a collective for each seat, located on the left, so the pilot wants to use the hand in the middle of the cockpit to work the radios and things.

Michael, a commercial pilot from New Jersey, writes: “In fixed-wing airplanes that require two pilots, the captain sits on the left. Why is that?” Because it’s easier for left-handed pilots, like me, to fly from the left seat, and we all know that lefties make the best pilots. Next question What..? What’s that? You say 90% of the pilot population disagrees with me? Oh. Pretty much western helicopter manufacturers doctorine is that by placing PiC in the right fact in those days there seat allows him to manipulate radios, avionics and all that stuff more easly with his left hand as it dosent have to be on the collective at all times. There are some New to helicopters. Buying an R44 to learn on. I am aware that pilots are told to solo them from the right seat. My simple questions is why? Is it a mandatory safety issue? Maybe to do with torque? Or W&B? Can they be soloed from left? I am way more comfortable using my left hand on the stick

So, the second (and rather larger) generation of helicopter pilots were taught to fly in the right hand seat, and the habit stuck. This could of-course be complete urban myth – I’ve no idea, I wasn’t there. Helicopters, especially combat ones, can be rather dangerous. So Can they be soloed from I was wondering why so few helis have ejector seats? I knoe going up isn’t an option, at least without blowing the blades off like the ka-50, but why not sideways? So the pilot can pull some lever and get shot out the helicopter sideways, and then the chute comes out.

This is my first column: Why do helicopter pilots sit on the right, while airplane pilots sit on the left? The short answer is because that’s what pilots are already used to, and any new aircraft are designed to fit current pilot preferences. Can a pilot sit on the right? In many helicopters with side-by-side seating, pilots can fly from either the left or right seat. Dual collectives became standard, allowing pilots to choose their preferred seating position. Why do helicopter captains sit on the right? Private Flying – Can I fly in the right seat and still be PIC? – Being a PPL pilot can you sit a passenger on the left hand seat and fly from the right hand side? Thanks

Why do plane pilots sit on left but helicopters on the right? Placing the helicopter pilot in the right seat frees the left hand whose main duty is tending the collective control which is not near as sensitive has the cyclic control for tending to Hello William, Helicopter pilots sit in the right seat, co-pilots sit in the left seat. This apparently has to do with the torque of the engine and the pilot’s weight being more beneficial if he’s on the right side of the helicopter. Regards, — Jerry Bransford PP-ASEL, KC6TAY, C.A.P. The Zen hotdog make me one with everything! In fact in those days there were „right seat“ pilots and „left seat“ pilots. The difference was so great because to change ment completely changing your hand positions, not as easy to do in a helicopter as in an airplane. I’ve tried it in a Bell 206 flying in the left seat using my right hand for the collective left on the cyclic. Nearly crashed many times while trying to hover. No dought you

Sikorsky S-76 Flt Manual limitations section says that minimum crew is „One pilot seated in the right seat.“ The reason is that not all controls and switches can be reached from the L seat.

In most helicopters, the aircraft is configured to be flown from the right seat primarily. The pilots can still fly from either seat due to all two-crew aircraft having flight controls at each pilot seat. I teach in helicopters and it absolutely feels weird to fly in the right seat now. I definitely fly worse in the right seat and just feel off the whole time I’m over there, like putting a shoe on the wrong foot. I think everywhere you go, airplane pilots sit left seat, helicopter pilots sit right seat. However, many larger helicopters do not have lateral CoG limitations found in smaller helicopters which makes the former flyable from either the left or the right seat. (Mind you, some fixed wing aircraft do not have such limitations either). It’s just a convention. Just 2 cents worth from a dual rated pilot.

Hi all, just wondering why it is captains/snr pilots sit in the right hand seat, well they do in the uk. does it really matter? i once got a peak in the cockpit of a super puma and it did look like the right hand side of the cock pit had one or two extra controls. The pilot in command PIC in a helicopter usually sits on the right side. In 2 pilot aircraft the PIC position is sometimes swapped however gernerally the PIC sits in the right seat. In larger more sophisticated helicopters with auto pit had one or two pilots and stability augmentation systems and force trim, the pilot can remove his or her hands from the controls.Absolutely can a pilot remove his or her Mi-8 has pilot on the left side. So is virtually all Soviet made helicopters. It is a choice of the tradition and ergonomics. I mean the model from arma ,, default is left side in game ,but if you like to sit on the right side and fly as pilot you can do that as well ( copilot seat can controll heli olso) #5 El Berl Aug 1, 2019 @ 8:34pm

Different for helicopters Interestingly, the tradition of seating captains on the left-hand side does not apply to helicopters. According to Smithsonian Magazine, sitting augmentation systems and on the right-hand side is common (but not universal) practice as it allows the pilot in command to keep their right hand on the aircraft’s sensitive cyclic control
