I have done in the DX version in Link’s Awakening that way. When I was playing the HD version, Marin seemed to know that I had the Ocarina when I didn’t have it equipped. In the Gameboy versions you had pull out the Ocarina near her before she would teach the song in Mabe village. He will reveal that you need to get Marin to awake the sleeping walrus, so your next task is to go find her, which is broken down in our guide about where Marin is. After you find Marin, you must bring her back to the Animal Village and then go back south to the walrus and interact with it to have Marin sing and wake it up.
